STARTING TODAY CHRISTIAN SCHMIDT IS NEW HIGH REPRESENTATIVE IN BIH

SARAJEVO, AUGUST 1 (ONASA) – As of today, Christian Schmidt is the new High Representative in BiH, and he arrived in our country on Friday afternoon. He visited Trebinje, Mostar, and arrived in Sarajevo late Saturday afternoon. Since it is Sunday, Schmidt will officially take office at the ceremony on Monday, August 2nd.
The ceremony will be attended by former High Representative Valentin Inzko, as well as former High Representative Christian Schwartz Schilling.
Schmidt comes at a time when tensions have erupted in BiH over the imposition of amendments to the BiH Criminal Code that prohibit genocide denial, glorification and rewarding war criminals. The RS government and opposition have reached a conclusion that they do not accept the imposed decision of the High Representative, and the NARS has passed amendments to the RS Criminal Code, which punishes insulting RS and calling it genocidal and aggressor.
The PIC board spoke on Saturday, condemning tensions and escalation caused by the RS government led by Milorad Dodik and backed by the opposition.
The Russian embassy withdrew from the statement, stating in a statement that Schmidt has no mandate and that all those who cooperate with him do so at their own risk. (end)
