SARAJEVO, NOVEMBER 4 (ONASA) – One of the world’s largest publishers of scientific literature, ELSEVIER BV, published on October 4, 2023, an updated list of 2% of scientists in the world with the greatest citation impact under the original title: October 2023 data-update for Updated science- wide author databases of standardized citation indicators.
In an article published by Elsevier and signed by Professor John P. A. Ioannidis with a group of researchers from Stanford University in California (USA), an updated list of the 2% of scientists in the world with the highest citation impact during their entire career and during the year 2022 was published, which based on scientific analysis of data available in Elsevier’s citation and bibliographic database SCOPUS.
The available database contains standardized information on citations, h-index, hm-index adjusted for co-authorship, citations of articles in different positions of the author in the analyzed article and a collective indicator of the impact of citations. Scientists are classified into 22 scientific fields and 174 scientific branches. For all scientists who have published at least 5 papers, percentages specific to the scientific field and scientific branch are given. The selection is based on the first 100,000 according to the c-score (with and without self-citations) or on the percentage rank of the 2% most cited.
The current list of scientists who are among the top 2% in the world in terms of citation impact includes 14 members of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Bosnia and Herzegovina, namely:

In the original study, which was published in 2020, it is stated that the influence of the citations of world scientists is often misinterpreted, and in order to achieve maximum objectivity, they created a publicly available database with more than 100,000 of the world’s leading scientists, where they use the principles of artificial intelligence that deal with by designing algorithms, looked at a number of parameters important for the objective evaluation of each individual scientist. Likewise, the importance of distinguishing between the terms number of citations and impact of citations is particularly emphasized.
The methodology used during the creation of the list of scientists with the greatest citation impact was published in the scientific journal Plos Biology in 2020:
